FAQ -Customer Supplied Press Sheets

Can Direct Envelope produce envelopes not shown in the pricing section?

Absolutely! We are a full service envelope company and offer products from coin envelopes, catalog envelopes, baronial envelopes, bangtail envelopes and more, so just fill out the quote request and submit or call 847 279 8260 or email

Will the converting process mark the stock?

If you are a printer sending in press sheets, sometimes especially on coated papers, the envelope machines can leave some light markings or light smudges.  Direct Envelope has processes in place to deal with this and is very good keeping this to a minimum.

Why do I need to send jogged press sheets?

Press sheets must be delivered to us square and jogged to provide a high quality product.  Direct Envelope cannot be responsible for registration if this is not adhered to.

Why should I print flat sheet litho when it is so much less money to print jet?

Jet printing is high quality litho and provides great results when the printing is not a paint job and the paper is uncoated.  Please see information on jet printing in the envelope guide.

What should I do if my window specifications do not fall within the stated requirements in the envelope guide?

If you aren't sure if your window specs fall within our parameters please call 847 279 8260 or email:

Can I print different envelope sizes as one press form?

To help save press time and plate dollars, Direct Envelope will gladly provide a custom layout based on your needs.

Can I print using another envelope company's press layout?

Usually the answer is no. Even if your previous envelope converter's die has the same flap size, there are differences between dies that aren't readily apparent, plus layouts between envelope companies differ based on the type of cutting equipment being used.  Direct Envelope will need to approve any layout other than ours before you proceed with printing.

Why do I have to print extra spoilage if you are billing me for over runs?

Because of numerous factors relating to automated manufacturing and differences in paper stocks and printing processes, it is impossible for envelope companies to know exactly the amount of spoilage needed to make count.  To be assured that we ship the quantity ordered we require the spoilage percentages stated in the shopping cart to account for possible machine jams and maintaining a high level of quality control.  If billable over runs are not acceptable please indicate that in the comment section when placing your order.

How does my pricing change if I send in press sheets that will be converted cross grain?

Direct Envelope does not charge additional for converting cross grain press sheets.

-There is a plus or minus 1/16" variance in high die cutting.
-For images that cross over the flaps or back turn up and need to match, or images and colors that end or break at the fold/score, result with the worst case scenario variation of plus or minus 1/8", after factoring in die cutting variations as well as folding variations.
